Handpicked this week: April 11

I spent the last week in Paris and it was a glorious celebration of spring. I adored the Jardin du Luxembourg in particular - the sculpted trees and the muted gravel paths served as a counterpoint to the exuberant pink and coral blossoms and the surprising exclamation points of palm trees. So this week we are going to talk about landscaping, spring parades and outdoor style.

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR (OR RATHER, EXTERIOR)

I first saw Matthew Cunningham’s work in Little Compton and was blown away by how fresh and organic it was, but also unobtrusive and serene. I love that there is always a play between light and dark, hardscape and soft plantings. I particularly love the use of lavender, which gives a nod to French fields and a whisper of color in the starker New England palette of greys and greens.

This house is a collaboration with architect Gail Goff, and the stonework and pool surround are just breathtaking.

And then I later saw this stonework installation. It seems like such a simple idea - but I have not seen a pattern like this before. It is modern and linear, but yet timeless and whimsical at the same time.

I adore the varying depths of the granite here - so interesting and unexpected. If you didn’t think landscaping was inspiring, I promise you will. Give him a follow and just salivate over all those pools.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

There is no more special street in spring than Monument Street in Concord, MA. But in Concord they DO IT UP - full Revolutionary War reenactments (cannons and more cannons at the North Bridge!), a parade with Minutemen from surrounding towns, a marching band with plenty of fife and drum. One of the most special memories I have of living on Monument Street in Concord was watching the parade march by our home - such a celebration of history, community and the legacy of freedom. So, when you have the opportunity to live on Monument Street, you snatch it up.

This adorable cottage is steps to the town center and set on a rise. It needs a new kitchen and at least one additional bath. But the gingerbread details on the porch, the Nantucket-style details (beadboard and built-in beds) and the yard with a picket fence make it simply charming.

3) Handpicked: STYLE

Before my trip to Paris I gave some serious consideration to footwear as I knew I would be walking a million steps. So of course that meant - what shoes will I wear that qualify as “Parisian chic”? I have loved Coclico since I first spotted Joanna Gaines with a pair of their wedges in her first season of Fixer Upper.

For Paris I chose the Gentian flat from the Transitional Collection that I had had my eyes on for a while. Comfortable, and goes with trousers or a dress:

For spring I also love the Epic Pump (I wear heels a lot with tailored pants):

And as we look to those warmer evenings, with the heady smell of even more gorgeous flowers, the Dipper Wedge would be just perfect.

Next week I'll share more about my Paris trip and what inspired me!

That's all from our team this week - can't wait until next week!

Handpicked this week: April 3

With most of my fall and winter projects winding down, I am preparing to take on two very large projects this spring and summer and I couldn't be more excited! One of the projects has a Revolutionary War tavern in it - where the Bedford Minutemen met before marching to the North Bridge. I can't wait for you to see this project unfold. It's literally history in the making and I am so honored to be a part of it.

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

You know that my years in California have permeated my design aesthetic permanently. I recently found M. Elle Design and am loving some of the moodier translations of that west coast aesthetic. I love how she fused darker shiplap in khaki and charcoal with airier decor - linen and woven textures. And of course the interior window which will be making an appearance at one of my projects soon!

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

I really like this area of Cambridge. It is very walkable - to Porter Square and to Whole Foods - and has a suburban neighborhood feel. Also the houses tend to be a lot more affordable than other areas of the city (it borders the opportunity zone of Cambridge). I love the Dutch Colonial architecture of this exterior - what wonderful curb appeal! It even has a picket fence - you would never guess this is in the city.

I of course love that the original woodwork is untouched, which means lots of character and charm to restore and celebrate.

3) Handpicked: STYLE

HapiArt is art that is full of joy and color (and sometimes it even has glitter!). So often I rely on a neutral backdrop - whites, creams - and then give the space a huge POW with bold art or color in furniture and decor. That way, if the client decides to change direction later (or seasonally), the foundation is set and the less expensive pieces can be refreshed. We recently ordered one of Hapi Art's pieces for a client in Needham, and let me tell you its exuberance sure does make me... happy!

That's all from our team this week - can't wait until next week!

Handpicked this week: March 27

Has everyone adjusted to daylight saving changes yet? I know I haven't - it is dark when I get up in the morning for yoga. It never feels like there are enough hours in the day (maybe that's the four kids?) - I think I need to consider afternoon coffee. I am however loving seeing the bulbs emerge and the wild courting turkeys which are ubiquitous in Cambridge these days.

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

When I start my morning doom-scrolling (as my husband calls it while I call it early AM inspo), I always pause on the work of Jocelyn O Dickson Architecture. Her work in Maine is how I found her; her Algonquin Project was featured in Dwell and is a creative imagining of a tired bungalow. But I was most thrilled to see her The Little Traverse project in Michigan, as my most deeply rooted style aesthetic comes from a rambling old summer house belonging to my grandparents in Charlevoix, Michigan. Jocelyn's amazing mix of wood and texture melds mid century notes and California modern with a classic summer house vibe (check out the bunk room).

I am also completely in awe of her project Rock Camp, which updated a traditional Maine log cabin camp with new, flanking 4-season outbuildings. The new architecture is harmonious with the landscape but also with the original log cabin.

Really spectacular talent - I hope you'll follow her on Instagram

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

We just started a project in Winchester this week, so of course I had to see what was for sale in the area. And I came across Brooks Street. Can we just take a second to appreciate this beauty? Take a look at that wrap-around porch and the beautiful, tree-filled lot, with all the original wood details preserved in this Victorian classic. The house could use a hefty splash of know-how to connect the old and new - just what my team loves most!

3) Handpicked: STYLE

As this weather turns warmer I find myself adding some color to my closet. Out with the black pants and tailored shirts and in with the maxi dresses! This new company Pampelone has so many easy, timeless pieces that are perfect for the warmer months (or layered with a cardigan in the shoulder seasons).

4) BONUS: Help for Ukraine

As an adoptive family, we just learned from our social worker this morning that many families are watching in horror as the Ukrainian children they're supposed to adopt flee into the mountains or shelter in basements. You might think "what does helping Ukraine have to do with interior design?" We can always make thoughtful choices with design, which is one of the reasons I love this field.

If you need new art pieces - perhaps for a renovated space or gallery wall - consider downloading art from Ukrainian artists and having it printed with a high quality vendor (even at the UPS Store!). You can find one of my favorites here (you can even download art for the Frame TV which many of our clients have). Money goes right to the artist - no shipping involved!

Handpicked this week: March 20

Welcome to my Handpicked by Milk and Honey Group newsletter. We are moving right along with all of our projects and couldn't be more excited to show you what we have been working on. We have a new photographer partner in the works and are gearing up for all of our projects to be shot so we can keep all of you in the loop !

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

Hutker Architects is pure inspiration for me. Coming from a long line of architects, I was "dragged" as a child to houses and schools and buildings all over this country and beyond. So I know what I love, and what really moves me... and Hutker Architects is everything. Every detail is considered and thoughtful and just stunning. I love that they capture my favorite parts of California design, with a meld of indoor and outdoor living, but their work is also uniquely appropriate to and evocative of New England (think barn details, shingle style architecture, etc).

This gorgeous home in Lincoln, MA was one of my first glimpses at Hutker's incredible work.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

That 70 degree day on Friday buoyed my mood so when I saw this house... I have one word for you. POOL. It is in the CITY. Yes, it has beautiful hardwood floors throughout, and a ton of potential with with all the extra living space and Victorian details (props for the vintage BMW in the drive). But did I mention the pool? Update the kitchen and it's a pool AND a party!

3) Handpicked: STYLE

As someone who focused on painting during my university and art schools years, I am always drawn to textile artists who have a painterly feel. Recently we ordered some fabrics from Megan Adams Brooks and they are beautiful! While her fabric is more in the vein of Quadrille (a little more traditional), her artwork can work in many different spaces from transitional to modern. I am so excited to share her work with all of you and encourage you to explore her offerings.

I hope you love these handpicked favorites! Have a great weekend and I'll chat with you next week!

Handpicked this week: February 27

This week was February school vacation for many of us with kids and the weather was bananas - a high of 70 degrees one day, followed by another weekend of heavy snowfall (ugh, classic New England). I am not sure about you but I am counting the days untill spring - 22 to be exact!

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

If you haven't found her already, Kate Marker is a must-follow. This week I selected all of these interior photos from her Honeysuckle project, so you could see the consistency of her design throughout a whole house. You will notice a lot of the same color scheme, but she varies tones, texture and patterns. Her design is flawless, current and restrained, yet deeply innovative, warm and inviting.

I mean just look at the breadth of lighting choices - swoon! Kate Marker is a designer whom I consistently look to, especially for clients whose taste is more traditional. Some other favorites include her Elm Project and her adorable summer Airbnb in Michigan (be still my heart), the Leo Cottage.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

Gracious and welcoming like so many houses built in the 1900's, this house in Concord is in a prime location. I love this period for homes because the spaces are generous, the ceilings are high and the flow makes sense. I can see the whole house infused with some Kate Marker-inspired style (see above) - celebrating the elegant architecture yet infusing some contemporary style.

Look at all those gorgeous leaded glass windows! It won't take too much (ok, we need to pay some attention to the bathrooms) to breathe new life into this one...

3) Handpicked: STYLE

I've talked about zellige, but if you haven't already seen Tiles of Ezra, drop everything and take a peek. Handmade in Morocco and Vietnam, the beauty of their tiles is really the imperfections and irregularities. Everyone is looking for patinathese days - and these tiles bring history and character with them. And... they also do terrazzo. I just love how using a tile like this instantly gives a renovated space depth and history.

I hope you love these handpicked favorites! Have a great weekend and I'll chat with you next week!

Handpicked this week: February 18

We are so busy these days - I am so privileged to have projects booked through fall right now with some incredible and trusting new clients. In fact, we have so much work we've brought on an Assistant Designer Jaclyn (we're adding to the "Group")! Welcome Jaclyn (you'll hear more about her in the weeks to come)!

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

With all this snow, I'm dreaming of a warm escape. Another favorite Australian designer Tamsin Johnson has gorgeous coastal modern style but with unexpected twists. Pink and white stripes (ode to French cabanas!), modern furniture shapes and sculptural rattan are all fresh and inspiring.

Chairs or sculpture?

That terrazzo floor!

I just love how Tamsin's clean, casual style is clearly influenced by the sea, but doesn't involve tropical prints or shells (yes those rattan fish are almost kitsch - but unexpected enough to be inspired). I need to visit Australia soon and see all this work in person.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

One of my favorite clients alerted me to this gem in Newton Center. It was designed by Annie Cobb, one of the country's first women architects and is basically untouched. So of course it is calling to me (and you maybe?). Gorgeous paneling detail and even the original brass taps! Swoon.

It definitely needs some updates in the baths and the kitchen, but nothing too difficult to make it really spectacular. And with a price cut, it's a pretty amazing investment.

3) Handpicked: STYLE

For Christmas, I got this adorable (and waterproof!) Mark & Graham beach tote. I always cherish a personalized gift and there are so many ways you could use a monogrammed tote like this - individual pieces for the kids (think about all that wet ski gear), one for the pup, multiples for a summer house (you'll never lose your spot on the beach!)... Speaking of beach accessories, does anyone have any good book recommendations??? I just finished the Paper Palace and highly recommend it, both for the gripping story but also for its evocative summer vibe.

BONUS TOOL: What will it cost?

Are you considering a renovation in 2022? Then I hope you'll download my Renovation Spreadsheet. It details all the expenses involved in renovation construction and can be used for a single bathroom to a full home.

I hope you love these handpicked favorites! I would love to hear from you and what YOUR favorites are this week.

Handpicked this week: January 9

This new year already feels like a blur. This past week was hard as I deciphered myriad emails from my kids' schools on mask requirements, quarantine protocols, "close contact" definitions... ugh! So glad I have you and design to keep me inspired and moving forward.

I am very grateful for all of you here, and I wish you and your families health - above all, health - and peace as we navigate the continued stress of COVID.

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

Oregon-based Kaemingk Design is everything that is fresh in interiors currently. If you had to guess where she was based, I don't think you could. There is a freedom that is decidedly West Coast, but the patina is European and there are many farmhouse and traditional details that would make you guess New England!

Check out some of my favorites and then head to their website to choose your own:

Currently trying to source doors like this on the East Coast... which is like searching for the Holy Grail apparently.

Isn't the work lovely? Organic and minimal and Japonesque yet fresh and inviting and comfortable. I love it.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

New inventory is starting to come on the market which is so exciting! My longtime friend, colleague and realtor Sharon Mendosa just brought this listing to market. Architecturally it's incredible with lots of mid-century notes, (and who doesn't want a sauna right about now). It's also very unusual to see such a modern, studied home like this in the Boston suburbs.

Sauna party?

It definitely needs some updates in the baths and the kitchen, but nothing major to make it really spectacular. Who's in?

3) Handpicked: STYLE

I am completely obsessed with Two New York right now. Their pieces are chic, sustainable and globally interesting. My style has always been a mish mosh, but since our family is transracial and transcontinental, I'm really into pieces that encourage global artisans yet don't overstep with cultural appropriation. I also try to support smaller companies that celebrate different bodies, and racial and ethnic diversity in their models.

For Christmas, I got this beautiful kantha jacket. It's so so so cozy. It was quite a splurge but I used a coupon and feel like it's a long-term investment. And as a mom, I have a very limited rotation of pieces so I try to choose pieces that are high quality instead of the fast fashion of my 20s.

Definitely have my eye on this caftan!

Is it a poncho? Is it a dress?

They sent me a lovely sachet filled with lavender with my coat too... I love details like that!

4) BONUS TOOL: What will it cost?

Are you considering a renovation in 2022 (but are maybe feeling a little terrified)? Then I hope you'll download my Renovation Spreadsheet. It details all the expenses involved in renovation construction and can be used for a single bathroom to a full home.

I hope you love these handpicked favorites! I would love to hear from you and what YOUR favorites are this week.

Handpicked this week: December 19

A month got away from me in sending out this newsletter... between finishing up a major renovation and planning for 2022, I have had very few moments to sit with my computer. I'm so glad you're still here!

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

It seems amazing that I have sent out Handpicked without mentioning one of my all-time favorite designers (and professional inspiration, Raili Ca Design. Her blend of California surfer is elevated, comfortable and always refreshingly original. She is not afraid to take risks with a sense of playfulness, and I find myself consistently referring to her work just to remind myself not to play it safe!

I mean, this window is everything

I mean, who is this amazing with bathrooms?

Mid century, contemporary, reimagined vintage... she does it all. Definitely check out her IG feed too.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

It's slim pickings this time of the year in the real estate world, as the holidays bring the market to a snail's pace. I had saved this home a couple of months ago, and while the listing was just removed, it's still available. In the Auburndale section of Newton, it's a gorgeous Italianiate Victorian sited on nearly two acres. It was beautifully staged but definitely needs a big facelift in the kitchen and baths... but oh those details!

Look at the location and the setting!

The fireplaces in the whole house are incredible

And then we get to the kitchen... where it all kind of falls apart.

This is my favorite kind of home - just yearning to be loved and for the original details to be celebrated!

3) Handpicked: STYLE

I wear a LOT of maxi dresses since I'm so tall, but fall and winter have me putting away those in favor of black pants and tunics/sweaters/my favorite Zuri tops

But I recently discovered Oliphant and now my maxi world has reopened in the colder months. Colors and sleeves appropriate for layering and cooler weather... which is your favorite?

Might have to add these to my holiday list!

Handpicked this week: November 14

With the clocks set back, we enter a season of darkness and with that a greater awareness of how much light means to us. Reflection, thoughtful lighting design and candlelight are all top of mind with my clients currently. I find I am drawn to images and inspiration that are full of glow, lustre and coziness.

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

In keeping with my awareness of light (and the lack of it) these days, my appreciation for moody, luminous interiors grows. And, combined with my obsession with adding patina to interiors to counterbalance a refreshed interior renovation, I am always delighted by the work of deVol Kitchens (based in the UK but with a NY showroom). They offer bespoke kitchens, but also furniture, hardware and lighting that works in both historic and modern homes. Feast your eyes!

And I just found out they have a show on the Magnolia Network!

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

This week I couldn't decide whether to put this home in the Design section or Real Estate. I met Delyse and Jon Barry of Upstate Down this summer when they rented our cottage in Rhode Island (so glad to call them friends now). They're insanely talented, and are doing both brokerage and development in the Rhinebeck, NY area.

Partnering with The Art of Building, they just listed this incredible house on 7 South Street. There are so many details I'm savoring and I'm already showing some of the nuanced design ideas to clients. I particularly love the kitchen which takes some cues from English style and marries time-worn materials and Shaker details with modern lines.

Loving this modern update to a traditional island with furniture legs

These pine floors!

3) Handpicked: STYLE

I follow a lot of design coming out of Australia - from interiors to clothing and bedding to furniture. It's like a mashup of California and Bali and English style - all in one! I also love a lot of the indigenous art - mainly in the form of textiles and printmaking - from there.

One resource that aggregates all of these favorites is Jumbled. Follow them on Instagram for a joyful curation of art, decor items and fashion! I love their rainbow palette and am always happy to see warmer weather when we are in the cold months (remember hemispheres?). They also carry art and bedding from one of my very favorite artists and resources, Rachel Castle.

Love these pink vases in particular (doesn't it all look like sea glass?)

Rachel Castle is bananas talented

Which of these will be on your holiday list?

4) BONUS TOOL: What will it cost?

I know I keep mentioning this, but I encourage you to check out my recently released Renovation Spreadsheet. It details all the expenses involved in renovation construction and can be used for a single bathroom to a full home.

I hope you love these handpicked favorites! I would love to hear from you and what YOUR favorites are this week.

Handpicked this week: October 31

Halloween insanity and sugar bombing has this going out a bit late. We had a flower fairy, a snow fairy, a ghostbuster, Wilbur Coot and Ted Lasso in our house - what did your family go as?

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

One of my favorite interior design studios is Chango and Co, out of New York. Our style is similar: create a composed backdrop of soothing white and textural neutrals and pop it with joyful splashes of color, bold lighting and artwork. They're not afraid to have an opinion!

Also I love that they're often using pieces that are affordable and readily available (West Elm, Global Lighting, etc). As someone who worked at Pottery Barn, I can assure you the teams of furniture and decor designers, as well as the buyers (the people who select the collection) are uber-talented - take advantage of their assemblage of creative genius!

Not a pop of color, but love the built-in sofa (which inspired my home in Little Compton, Rhode Island) and the vintage pieces.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

My amazingly talented friend Nicole staged this Cambridge home and I was so lucky to bump into her on the street mid-installation. Apparently there is a POOL (not a pool table) on the ground floor, which is classic Cambridge-peculiar, but hey! It also has a bizarre Japonesque sitting area (elevate) in the kitchen.

Don't be freaked out. Be woo'd by the original wood details, the gorgeous original marble sinks and the feeling of the suburbs right smack in the middle of the city.

3) Handpicked: STYLE

Continuing my East Africa theme, I want to share one of my absolute favorite clothing companies, Zuri. I have literally 3 shirts and 2 dresses from them... why? Because you put on the shirt (or dress) and its tailored structure is super-flattering and it looks like you made an effort. Throw it in the wash, hang it up, and off you go. No need to iron to look pulled together.

I choose prints that aren't overtly tribal as I do not want to give the appearance of appropriation while still supporting a company that ethically employs a workforce in Kenya (guaranteeing living wages and fair working conditions).

For me the dress is more like a tunic, so I pair it with black jeans. Did I mention they're really, REALLY flattering?

4) BONUS TOOL: What will it cost?

For those of you who are wondering if the boom construction market is going to turn around and materials prices are going to drop, I encourage you to check out my recently released Renovation Spreadsheet. It details all the expenses involved in renovation construction and can be used for a single bathroom to a full home.

I hope you love these handpicked favorites! I would love to hear from you and what YOUR favorites are this week.

Handpicked this week: October 24

The impending cold weather was making me cranky, but then we took a deep dive into Ted Lasso (I know... we're like the last ones). I did not realize how I craved joy and positivity back in my life! What are you binge-watching these days?

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

Have you heard of The Brooklyn Home Company? I don't even know what they are - like a beautiful mash-up of interior design, Etsy craftsmanship, real estate development, feng shui and environmental advocacy. Their work is restrained and yet dynamic - with the most exquisite artisinal details, curated collections of vintage gewgaws and interesting organic and textural furniture and lighting pieces.

I mean come ON. Look at these stairs. They're what dreams are made of.

It's all just so... perfect. Airy and uncluttered, but so deliberate and intriguing. Apparently they have their other office in Jackson which I have yet to explore.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

One of my cherished friends and real estate agent extraordinaire sent me this listingin Concord. I'm working on a house down the street and this neighborhood is heaven - walkable and historic. She knew that I would love all the untouched architectural details and suggested I purchase it to flip it! I'm not quite there yet, but I'm hoping someone will reach out who needs my help to restore this charmer back to life!

Who would like to take on this project with me??? Apparently there is a lot of potential to expand on the lot and make it a beautiful home and a great investment.

3) Handpicked: STYLE

This week I want to focus on an area very close to my heart - Ethiopia. With two children from Ethiopia, we travel to east Africa a lot. Their textiles are beyond gorgeous (my favorites are from Arba Minch, in the southern part of the country) - with vibrant colors and the softest cotton imaginable as part of their rich maker tradition.

But sometimes global textiles can look out of place in a modern interior. So there are many companies out there employing local workers and revitalizing local economies, while producing products - complete with quality control and worker benefits - appropriate for a cosmopolitan market.

Bole Road has been featured in Architectural Digest and Vogue, and is an excellent example of an Ethiopian-owned business that has been created for a modern aesthetic. Vibrant brights, coastal blues and moody neutrals - Hana Getachew has successfully translated this craftsman legacy into something luxurious and refined.

Her pieces are at home in mid century modern homes and beach houses alike!

4) BONUS TOOL: What will it cost?

I hope you will take a moment to check out my recently released Renovation Spreadsheet that details all the expenses involved in renovation construction and can be used for a single bathroom to a full home.

I hope you love these handpicked favorites! I would love to hear from you and what YOUR favorites are this week.

Handpicked this week: October 17

This glorious weather is so rejuvenating after weeks of back-to-school meetings, soccer shuttling and school picture shenanigans. I feel particularly joyful when I see our Ghostbusters Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man in our yard for Halloween. I'm a designer, but I fully believe in letting the kids decorate!

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

I hope you've seen the beautiful and patina-driven work of Leanne Ford. She is a little nutty, and a lot talented. I particularly love that she is mixing mid-century and ultra-modern pieces with DIY projects and artisanally made furniture. She also has a TV show with her brother called Home Again with the Fords that's perfect for laundry-folding!

Leanne Ford is fully embracing the trend of lime-washing walls to give them dimension and texture. She generously shares her method here. We have been doing a lot of smooth-plastered fireplaces and this technique would be perfect to give some character to newer homes.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

I saw this house come on the market in Cambridge this week and was swept away. It is my favorite type of home - untouched! Many people would throw up in their mouths when they see a house like this, but for me it's just potential. Beautiful architectural details to restore (those arched cabinets and brass handles!), generous spaces and gracious architecture.

Don't be scared by old, dirty houses! That's why you have someone like me - to see the potential through the neglect. And usually the old houses are in premiere locations. (PS: It seems to be off the market already which is unusual for this location, so I hope whomever snatches it up knows what a gem they have.)

3) Handpicked: STYLE

I had a client this week ask me to start helping her think about artwork in her newly finished home (for those on IG, it's my #needhamnewconstruction project). As a former art history major, who worked at the Met in gilded age decorative arts but wrote her thesis on pop art, I am inspired by lots of different types of art and love to support artists on shops like Etsy.

One artist who seems to have a universal appeal with my clients is Kerri Rosenthal, who offers a California-chic, pop-art infused aesthetic. Also... she's just really nice to work with!

(I own the "Love is Here" piece in super large format at our Rhode Island house, but shown in plexi block form here.)

She's probably most famous for her Drippy Heart series, which was featured by one of my favorite California designers, Raili Ca.

4) BONUS TOOL: What will it cost?

Be sure to check out my recently released Renovation Spreadsheet that details all the expenses involved in renovation construction and can be used for a single bathroom to a full home.

I hope you love these handpicked favorites! Have a great end to your weekend and I'll chat with you next week!

Handpicked this week: October 11

This glorious three day weekend really re-energized me - we went camping up in the White Mountains (yes, with 4 kids!) and I Marie Kondo'd my pantry. What did you do to reclaim your own wellbeing?

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

If you haven't found her already, Athena Calderone of Eye Swoon is a must-follow. Yes, she often has moody videos where she shares a "styling tip" and deliberately moves a vase two inches right, then one inch left... but her design is flawless and very current.

Clients with dramatically different styles are all called to her unique blend of European patina (think plaster, bold Calacatta Monet marble and traditional English brass hardware), mid century furniture and lighting (yup, she has the Mario Bellini Cameleonda sofa) and modern architecture (black frames and glass, minimalist trim). Eye Swoon is the definition of the overused term "curated" but I know you'll find lots to, er, swoon over.

My personal favorite is her Amagansett home that you can visit here in Arch Digest.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

I had the privilege to tour this house in Little Compton a few weeks ago. Yes it's expensive. But, it's over 6 acres on the water (you read that SIX), winterized, and comes with a subdividable lot and a sweet guest cottage (to rent, for a caretaker, etc).

I was hoping the owners would let me do a mini-refresh for them as it has incredible bones, some divine mid-century arches and furniture and lovely old beams (but also some really awful lighting and 80s tile choices). But... they're not interested in renovating before selling. So... perhaps you and another friend would like to partner, and I'll fix it up for you! I even have a costed spreadsheet ready to go on this one!

3) Handpicked: STYLE

Move over cement! In keeping with Eye Swoon's love of time-worn patina, I hope you've noticed the trend in zellige tile. Historically made in Morocco, it is terracotta tile (often square) that is glazed by hand with enamel. It is irregular - both in texture and in color density and is absolutely gorgeous. (Note: it requires expert installation to account for the variations in thickness.)

Companies in the US that are supplying it include one of my favorites - Cle Tile - as well as a pile of other smaller vendors (some shipping directly from Morocco). It can be neutral, like this gorgeous shower from Amber Interiors:

Or it can be bold and moody, like this kitchen.

I have been sourcing some porcelain/ceramic options from Spain that LOOK like zellige but are sturdier (read: less porous) for clients, so let me know if this is a look you're inspired by!

4) BONUS TOOL: What will it cost?

I recently released a Renovation Spreadsheet for you to use that details all the expenses involved in renovation construction and can be used for a single bathroom to a full home.

Handpicked this week: October 3

The combination of a short vacation, back to school with four kids and then back to worktook all the time I had... thanks for sticking with me!

For new subscribers, in this weekly newsletter I share my top picks for the week - trends or particularly noteworthy design. Each week I'll share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are special. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

More and more my clients want designed spaces that are beautiful and inspiring, but that also can be lived in and used. Homes got extra wear and tear during Covid, and clients are asking for a refresh that reflects both their personal style and can handle the demands of work from home and intense family usage. This quote, from Vanessa Alexander of Alexander Design, really spoke to me: "A house that’s pretty but doesn’t live well is not well-designed.” Isn't that the truth of our lives?

I love this Montauk home that Alexander Design created - incredible mid century and California contemporary pieces mixed with textural elements of rattan, plaster, leather and white oak. Stunning, and yet can hold up to the heavy use of teen lounging, sandy feet and lots of friends.

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

This house has stuck in my brain this week since it was listed by my good friends the Butler/Wheeler team. A lot of mid-century gems in the suburbs were renovated to look more like their colonial neighbors, just like this one. Let's be honest, it's currently awful. But the price and access to Great Meadows Wildlife Refuge in Concord means it's just begging for a refresh (and it will be a great investment!).

Dark paint, and replacing some of the facade with glass, means that it could be transformed into something true to its roots, like this. All it needs is a little vision (OK a lot, but that's what I love to do)!

3) Handpicked: STYLE

Lighting is one of my favorite resources to hunt down. Just like a statement necklace elevates a simple tee and jeans, lighting is the detail that makes spaces sing and is worth spending a chunk of change on. I purchase a lot of lighting from Europe (France and the UK mostly), and love restoring antique fixtures as well.

One of my favorite collections currently is Roman and Williams Guild. Carefully handcrafted out of patina'd metals like unlacquered brass and milk glass, their lighting is unique and timeless (my current favorite is the Oscar pendant below). Check out their textiles and soft goods and handmade tableware too!

4) BONUS TOOL: What will it cost?

If you follow my on IG you may have seen that the top question I get from prospective clients is: "What will it cost?" I recently released a Renovation Spreadsheet for you to use that details all the expenses involved in renovation construction and can be used for a single bathroom to a full home. I really hope it might help YOU.

Handpicked this week: August 15

As you can imagine, I spend lots of time looking for inspiration each week and I find it all over the place... driving around Massachusetts and Rhode Island, on Instagram and Pinterest, on Zillow. And I'm still a huge fan of the old-fashioned magazine.

In this weekly newsletter, I'm going to share my top picks (or saves) for the week. Things that really inspired me and stuck in my brain, and that I hope will inspire YOU on your home journey.

Each week I'll share an interior, a real estate listing and a style item that I think are especially noteworthy. I'd love to know what you think about them too!

1] Handpicked: INTERIOR

I have been noticing a trend away from clean and tailored to interiors infused with old world details. I have been working on a client's home in Newton, and she is all about patina and a home that feels like it has history and yet is still modern. Plastered walls, textured tile, exposed plumbing - all elements found in this of-the-moment style. This interior, by Arianna De Gasperis, brings together all those elements - salvaged architectural details, plastering and the swoonworthy hardware and plumbing fixtures. Check out her kitchen below:

2) Handpicked: REAL ESTATE

I work mostly in the Boston area, but over the past 9 months my crew has been in Little Compton, Rhode Island. An extraordinarly special spot, it is an old farm town with rolling pastures, grazing cows, charming farmstands and crumbling stone walls that touch the ocean. Cherry Arnold listed this beauty this week, and it's all about the breathtaking landscaping - meandering gravel paths, the tailored pool and the secret artist cottage - that compliment the shingle style home.

3) Handpicked: STYLE

One of my favorite interior designers, Sarah Sherman Samuel, whom I follow on Instagram, wore this adorable dress by @daughtersofindia. It is the Chaaya Maxi Dress in Chai, and I knew it would be perfect for the height of a humid and hot New England summer. It is eminently flattering and the fullness of the bottom is very romantic (it trails down the stairs too which feels very Bridgerton to me). And it looks like you made an effort even if you barely leave the house still.

I hope you love these handpicked favorites! Have a great weekend and I'll chat with you next week!
